Fine Ink Studios’ Guide to Safe Body Piercing

Safety should be a studio’s first priority when getting a body piercing. However, body piercing (especially ear piercing) has the reputation that it can be performed by any retail employee at a mall. This has caused many people to be hesitant about choosing a body piercing studio because they’re worried about the cleanliness, professionalism, and safety measures. Whether you're getting your first piercing or are looking for a new Orlando body piercing studio, we want you to feel safe and comfortable at our tattoo studios. Here’s what you need to know to have a safe and healthy body piercing experience.

Body Piercing Methods

There are two primary methods of body piercing, but one is much more sanitary and safe than the other. We discuss the methods and which one you should choose here:

Piercing Guns

Piercing guns are often used at retail locations in malls and department stores that offer ear piercings. Even some pediatric offices use piercing guns to pierce kids' ears. The problem with piercing guns is that they use the force of the back of the earring to punch a hole in the ear. Earring backs are duller than a piercing needle and aren’t designed to create holes in ears, which causes more pain and increases your infection risk. Piercing guns are also nearly impossible to properly sanitize between uses because they're made of plastic. Many retail locations simply wipe them with antibacterial wipes, which is not a sufficient way to clean them.

Needle Piercing Highly Recommended

Needle piercing is the safest and most sanitary method of body piercing. This method is commonly used at Orlando body piercing shops like Fine Ink Studios. Needle piercing uses a sterile, sharp, hollow needle to puncture the skin. Then, another needle feeds the jewelry into the piercing. This method is often less painful and has a lower risk of infection than a piercing gun. These needles can be sterilized adequately with specialized equipment. Body piercers that use this method are certified and trained to perform these body piercings safely.

Safe Piercing Jewelry

The quality of the piercing jewelry will also play a part in how safe and healthy your piercing experience is. High-quality jewelry will also help your piercing heal faster. At Fine Ink Studios, all our piercing jewelry is certified by ASTM and made with solid gold and implant-grade titanium from Invictus, one of the nation’s most respected body piercing jewelry providers. Placement, gauge, threading, and style should also be considered when picking out piercing jewelry.

What To Do Before Your Appointment

You’ll want to do a few things before your appointment to have a great experience with your body piercing. First, avoid drinking and taking pain relievers. The reason for this is that alcohol and pain relievers are blood thinners, which can cause excessive bleeding. You’ll also want to cool it on the caffeine and energy drinks before you come in. Being jittery while trying to get a body piercing is not a good idea! On the day of your appointment, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that won’t irritate the piercing after you get it.

Body Piercing Aftercare

Piercing aftercare is crucial for your overall health and healing. Your piercing should be cleaned with a gentle saline solution at least once a day. Keep the area free from dust, dirt, and germs. Also, avoid twisting or touching the piercing—handling the piercing site with dirty fingers can increase the chance of infection or jewelry rejection. Healing times will vary depending on the type of piercing you get, but can be anywhere from two to six months. Do your research ahead of time so you’re prepared how to properly care for your piercing. Your Orlando body piercing artist will give you specific instructions for an aftercare routine for your unique piercing at your appointment.

Piercing for Minors

Getting pierced at a studio like Fine Ink Studios is much safer and less traumatic than going to a mall, especially for kids. Making kids feel comfortable and safe is the most important part of having a child get a piercing. That’s why choosing a quiet and clean environment ensures the process will go as smoothly as possible. For minors to get body piercings in Orlando, a parent or guardian must sign a consent form and have it notarized. For children under 16, a parent or guardian must be present during the piercing session. Check out our location list and contact the studio directly for more information.

Common Piercing Reactions

Professional piercings are safe, but some people may react differently. Here are a few normal reactions you may experience after getting your body piercing:

  • Piercing bumps (small, raised areas around the piercing site)

  • Bleeding

  • Swelling

  • Mild bruising

  • Tenderness

  • Itching

  • Yellowish-white liquid drainage

Some reactions aren’t normal and require medical attention. These include:

  • Inflamed skin that won't disappear

  • A new, fleshy concentration of scar tissue near the piercing site

  • Unusual drainage

  • Extreme pain

  • Skin that's hot to touch

  • Excessive bleeding

  • A fever greater than 101°F within 24 hours of getting a piercing

If you experience any of these symptoms, have a doctor check it out immediately.
