Thinking about getting your first tattoo and don't know where to start? No worries—we’ve got you covered. With so many different styles and design options available, how do you narrow it down? Check out our top tips for choosing the right tattoo design for your next Fine Ink below:
Pick Your Style
One of the first steps to choosing your perfect tattoo design is to become familiar with popular tattoo styles and find ones you resonate with. We discuss some of the most well-known tattoo styles here. Picking the style is the foundation of what your tattoo will look like. A dolphin tattoo in a New School style will look completely different than a dolphin in a Minimalist style. Once you pick a few styles, dive deeper and look for examples. You can do this easily on Instagram or TikTok by searching hashtags or doing a good ol' Google search. Notice the people around you for inspo, too. We love talking about our tattoos, so if you see someone with a tattoo you like, strike up a conversation. Ask them where they got it done and how they decided on the style. Tattoos have a way of bringing people together!
Share Your Story
We all get tattoos for a reason (even if it’s "just cuz"), so make sure you know your reason for getting that particular tattoo. Take some time to reflect on the story you want your tattoo to tell. Are you inspired by a picture, symbol, or scene from the moment in life you’d like to commemorate? Do you want a tattoo to celebrate a hobby, milestone, or location? What about pop culture references or movies you like? The possibilities are truly endless.
Understand the Meaning
If you like a particular symbol, make sure you understand its meaning—in multiple languages and cultures. For instance, getting a tattoo of a hand in the shape of a “peace sign” can actually be an insult in Australia (if flipped opposite of how we use the sign in America). In addition, Chinese and Japanese symbol tattoos sometimes don't translate the way you may think. You don't want to find out that you accidentally got “dog poop” tattooed on your arm when you meant to get “strong will” (sorry, bro). Today, there are a million ways to get information about a tattoo's meaning before you get it. Make sure you do your research!
Think About Placement
If it seems like we talk about placement a lot, it’s because we do! Tattoo design is only one part of the puzzle—the right placement will make the tattoo really stand out and complement your unique body shape. You may have a beautiful design in mind. However, if something seems off, you may need to consider changing the design or location. Your tattoo artist should work with you to help you figure out the best placement for your tattoo design, considering the tattoo's visibility, longevity, and your personal pain tolerance.
Know Your Lifestyle
You want the tattoo to be practical for your daily life. If you get a tattoo where you’ll need to cover up for your 9-to-5, test the tattoo placement with your work clothes to see if it's an issue. If you want people to see your tattoo no matter what you wear, try on your favorite items before your appointment to see if the tattoo would be covered up when wearing them. You’ll also want to consider how your tattoo may affect your daily activities while it heals.
